Healing the Digestion

Ah, the digestion! Few body systems are as complex or as influential on our overall health than the digestion. What we eat affects our bodies, our emotions, and even our minds (clarity of thought can easily be compromised by certain foods!). There are lots of diets, fads, restrictions and advice columns about what to eat, but this class is about the herbal medicines that are so useful for addressing problems experienced in the digestive tract.

There are many herbs suited to easing the digestion and improving symptoms, and we'll cover these in detail and learn how to use them and how to combine them for the best results. We'll discuss many common digestive complaints, including indigestion, gas, bloating, gastric and peptic ulcers, constipation, diarrhea, and more. And since digestion begins in the mouth (actually it begins in the nose, with smell!) we'll discuss the effects of bitters and we'll also learn how the liver plays a role in digestion and ultimately in greater body health. And we'll learn about herbal tonics, especially in the form of teas/infusions, and sample various remedies so you're familiar with their flavor.

You'll have full access to explore Vineyard Herbs' Apothecary Garden and to discover plants that increase iron levels, sweeten naturally, ease and relieve painful digestive symptoms, as well as edible wild plants that make excellent foods for our wild-deprived bodies.

This class is part of the week-long Intro to Herbal Medicine and can be taken individually or with other classes during the week; please indicate your intent upon registration.

Date: Monday July 28, 10-3

Tuition: $125

Please bring a potluck dish to share at lunch.
