Herbalist Holly Bellebuono offers a wide range of workshops and classes for visitors to Martha's Vineyard--perfect for an afternoon with a sister, friend, or spouse. These classes are ideal for beginners and advanced gardeners alike: whether you know very little about plants or healing, or you are a Nurse or a Botanist, these workshops are designed to educate, uplift and inspire.
Elderberry: Lessons with the Woman in the Elder. The elderberry shrub (Sambucus nigra or S. canadensis) is an ancient and powerful plant, both physically and mythically. It comes to life in this lecture where you will discover its origins, mythology, botany, harvest, and use. Sample elderberry cordial, syrup, tincture, and maybe even ice cream! Holly offers On-Your-Own-Property Herb Walks, as well. These 1 1/2 hour walks are very popular because I travel to a person's own home to show them what grows around them. I provide a detailed written botanical inventory (habitat list) for later reference, and allow the property owner(s) to include up to three people at an all-inclusive fee of $75; additional friends and family are welcome at $20 per person. Herb Walks take place around the Up-Island region of Martha's Vineyard (i.e., the west side) nearly every Saturday afternoon at 2pm. This is a beautiful countryside with meandering woodland trails, ocean views, ponds, barrier islands, deep forests, gardens, and ancient farmland. Please call or email to find out where that week's herb walk will take place. Bring good hiking shoes, sunscreen, a hat, light-colored pants or socks, and paper and pen if you would like to take notes. All herb walks are $25 and last about 1 1/2 hours.
