THE HERITAGE & HEALING HERBAL STUDIES PROGRAM
Enrollment begins: April 2012
The Heritage & Healing Herbal Studies Program is a comprehensive introduction to the foundations, the basics, of western botanical healing, with an emphasis on formulary, herbal craftsmanship, and the appreciation of historical cultures and people in the heritage of world healing. This program is designed with beginner, intermediate, home-health herbalists, nurses, and other alternative healers in mind, making Latin herbalism, chemistry and anatomy easily assimilable so that healers can avail themselves of the many benefits plant medicine has to offer.
The Program is easy to follow, offering a wealth of herbal healing information structured by body system—so that the student covers a wide range of medical and herbal information seamlessly and in a coherent format. Herbs, body systems and illnesses are all cross-referenced for easy understanding of how herbal actions affect our overall health. With both an audio CD and written format, the student will learn the basic philosophies of holistic treatment in a framework of plant-based healing.
The Program teaches these important basics:
The identification, harvest, and use of herbs for the creation of western herbal remedies;
The methods and philosophies of herbal formulary, and how to envision and prepare formulas for a variety of body systems and illnesses;
Holly's Four-Tier Formula Structure for maximum healing support;
Herbal craftsmanship, and how to make effective hand-made herbal remedies;
Health & wellbeing for every member of the family, with a special emphasis on women’s health, anatomy, and wellbeing;
Body system education, incorporating anatomy, chemistry and botany for a basic understanding of health issues relative to body system;
The heritage and history of botanical medicine;
The stories of individual women throughout history who have contributed to this extraordinary heritage;
The basics of entrepreneurialship in regard to owning an herbal business, or being an alternative health practitioner;
Carefully chosen health issues for additional inclusion on high-quality audio CD, to make listening to each Lesson as easy as slipping a CD into a player;
Guidance in using herbs as a foundation for family wellness.
This course is unique in that it is not solely a clinical instruction book. As a traditionally trained herbalist, Holly comes from a perspective of appreciating “why” certain herbs are culturally or historically used for various ailments, and she has a great respect for the women and men who, for centuries, experimented, listened to, and used plants—ultimately sharing their knowledge for future generations. This heritage is the entire reason herbal medicine is available to us today, so this course incorporates a study of world cultures and traditions and introduces the myriad healing traditions practiced around the world. It goes even further than that—in addition to offering students a valuable introduction to science-based formulary using chemistry, botany, and anatomy, the Heritage & Healing Herbal Studies Program also brings to life the history, heritage, folklore, and tradition that our foremothers and forefathers created for us by introducing real women who shaped --and continue to shape--our understanding of healing. Not only will you learn what herbs are anti-inflammatory or vulnerary, appreciate how to use them in circumstances of injury or illness, and discover how to craft formulas specific to hundreds of given conditions, you will also develop a robust appreciation for non-western systems of healing and hear the words and stories of women healers, chemists, botanists, and midwives from hundreds and even thousands of years ago.
A large part of this information stems from herbalist Holly Bellebuono’s interviews with current women healers from all over the world, and she shares this information in great detail in her slide documentary Our Healing Heritage: Exploring World Medicine Tradition and Women Healers. This herbal studies program incorporates much of the documentary’s extraordinary information in an easy-to-follow format, allowing the novice or intermediate herbalist, nurse, or other healer the chance to “meet” fellow healers from all over the world and to learn about their methods, their challenges, and how plants form an integral part of their healing practice and culture.

Structure of the Heritage & Healing Herbal Studies Program
The Program consists of 4 parts, all included with enrollment:
-
The Heritage & Healing Herbal Formulary Studies Program Book
-
The Workbook
-
6 Educational Audio CDs
-
The Essential Herbal for Natural Health: How to Transform Easy-to-Find Herbs into Healing Remedies for the Whole Family by Holly Bellebuono.
Another required book for completing the course is Green Pharmacy, by Barbara Griggs.
Arranged by body system, each Lesson begins with an introduction about that particular system and then goes into detail about diseases or issues associated with that system. Herbs are recommended, protocols given, and in many cases sample (or possible) formulas are provided. The approach is holistic, and a variety of preventive and natural methods are given in addition to herbal treatment. Of course, no one formula will work for all people, which is a wonderful opportunity for the student to use his or her creativity, study, and intuition in the formulary practice in the Workbook.
The Workbook will also guide you through the herbal medicine manufacturing process, listing the materials you’ll need and demonstrating how to create a variety of healing remedies for home use. The more frequently you experiment with creating your remedies, and harvesting the plants, the more familiar you will become with the tenents of herbal craftsmanship. Extra materials, packaging (including jars, beeswax, oils, etc.) is estimated to cost approximately $75; we recommend re-using glass containers (such as baby food jars and canning jars). Purchase new lids, as well as fresh oils and wax. (These can be found at most health food stores or ordered online through www.vineyardherbs.com.) Of course, you’ll be harvesting most of your own herbs, but those you can’t grow or wildcraft can easily be found at health food stores or online through botanical warehouse distributors.
Students who use this course will be availing themselves of a strong foundation for a number of careers, including herbal medicine, homeopathy, naturopathy, the organics industry, business, women’s studies and entrepreneurialship, as well as nursing, conventional medicine, and midwifery. Plants form the basis of a broad range of medical careers, and herbalism combines botany, anatomy, chemistry, and of course history in a phenomenal and unique perspective, allowing the graduate to move confidently in a myriad of professional directions.
While this program is a comprehensive introduction to herbal healing, it is specifically not a preparatory program for clinical practice and does not offer hands-on clinical internships, experience, or nursing credits. It does, however, serve as a valuable supplement to clinical herbal education, midwifery, pharmaceutical, and nursing education, and hands-on workshops and stimulating and educational retreats and lectures are offered throughout the year, primarily on Martha's Vineyard but also throughout the United States.
Enrollment in this program is unique in that it offers a wealth of information on audio CDs that can be listened to in the car, in the home, and on the computer. These CDs complement the written material in the Lessons and can accompany you as you travel so you can complete your lessons ‘on the go.’ Your access to these CDs is invaluable as you can repeat information and re-visit important formulas and protocols related to specific body systems.
Further study is always available through retreats, classes and workshops guided by herbalist Holly Bellebuono, to thoroughly integrate your learning experience. These gatherings are comfortable and pleasurable, often bringing women and men of similar interest together to share valuable knowledge, ask questions, and enhance their understanding of a healing tradition that has, thankfully, affected us all. For a calendar of upcoming workshops and retreats, please visit www.vineyardherbs.com or email holly at holly@vineyardherbs.com.
Upon successful completion of the program and successful evaluation of its Workbook questions, the Program will confer a:

suitable for framing and hanging and for inclusion in your resume or curriculum vitae. The entire program is to be completed at your own pace, allowing approximately one month per Lesson, for a completion schedule of one to two years.
We hope you enjoy studying the wide variety of skills, topics, and insights garnered from Holly's 17 years of herbal experience and the countless centuries of experience of all those who have come before us. Apply this knowledge in your career, in your home, for your clients and for your families. We look forward to welcoming you into the herbal heritage!
